More than 15,000 attend show
International Quilt Festival featured
sun and stitching in Long Beach!
With warm and breezy weather conditions and sunny skies above, thousands of quilting enthusiasts made California a summer destination, from July 29-31, at the fourth annual edition of International Quilt Festival/Long Beach.
A total of 15,043 attendees came to the Long Beach Convention Center over the course of the show. And while that figure is slightly down from last year’s total, it proved that—while other shows and festivals across the country are facing major problems—quilting and fabric arts continue to be popular and attract large numbers.
“It was a beautiful and exciting show with lots of new things to see, and our attendees were happy and in a buying mood,” says Festival founder and director Karey Bresenhan. “I love watching how this show continues to evolve each year.”
Attendees shopped at nearly 300 booths, with vendors offering everything from finished antique and contemporary quilts to fabrics, books, patterns, notions, sewing machines, and crafts. More than 500 quilts and pieces of fabric art were on display, and 80-plus classes ranging from beginning quilting to many expert techniques kept people learning.
Also returning this year was the Make It University!™ section with vendors and classes on mixed media, paper, and fiber arts. It was coordinated by Pokey Bolton, Editorial Director of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine.
And—with proof that quilters are up on their social media—attendees blogged, Tweeted, and Facebooked comments about the show and their experiences the entire weekend. Festival also kept those at the show and around the world informed via its own Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as the “virtual show” QuiltFestival@Home, which featured photos of quilts on display and shots from the classrooms and show floor.
Next year’s International Quilt Festival/Long Beach will take place July 27-29, with Preview Night and classes beginning on July 26.
