CORAL TREE, SHWESHWE
from Marula Imports
Retail: n/a
www.marulaimports.com
Note: The culturally significant Shweshwe is a discharge-printed cotton fabric, in which repetitive geometric patterns are created first by dying (traditionally using indigo), and then applying a weak acidic solution using patterned copper rollers. The result is a white pattern placed upon a vibrant background of indigo blue, red, or deep brown. First introduced to South Africa by German settlers in the 19th century, Shweshwe became highly popular among the country’s Xhosa women, who felt it complemented their red blanket clothing. It has since become a deeply ingrained part of many of their traditions.

One of three collections available as part of Marula Imports’ new Coral Tree range, Shweshwe is derived from the traditional Shweshwe fabrics and features many of the original designs. Though available in the traditional indigo colorway, the collection also includes print in non-traditional black and white, pink, and purple palettes. Design motifs include both geometrics and florals. Manufactured in South Africa.
