We are so excited to return to California this summer for International Quilt Festival/Long Beach! This year’s show will take place July 6-8 at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center.
Quilt artists, collectors, and enthusiasts from all parts of the world will travel to Long Beach for the show. And the main reason they come? To see the beautiful quilts, of course—all of which will be hung with loving care by people just like you!
This year, there will be over 20 special exhibits with more than 425 quilts to see. We are very pleased that you would like to work with us this year. We are always looking for good help, and in return, you will be part of a special group of people who are proud of the work they do to promote and encourage the wonderful art of quilting.
We will need volunteers to help hang quilts and to work as door people and quilt guardians. We will start hanging quilts on Monday, July 3. Takedown will commence immediately after the show closes at 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, July 8. If you know anyone who might be interested in working the show, (and are reliable) please let them know about working. We will be paying the volunteers $15.50 an hour. You will also receive free entry into the show for each day you work (a $15 value). On Saturday, we will also feed you a meal during the takedown shift if you will stay until we are done. FYI – we must be loaded on the truck by midnight!
We are also looking for non-profit groups that would like to raise money by working for us. The members will receive free entry into the show. The hours they work will be credited to their organization, to which a check will be issued after the show.
For security purposes, photo IDs are required for all workers. These must be worn at all times while you are working the show. You can either bring two clear photocopies of a picture ID with you (your driver’s license works best) or we can copy your ID at the check-in desk. We will keep one copy in our book and you will wear the other. Please pass this information along to anyone you think might be interested in working with us and being part of the country’s fastest-growing quilt show.
Please go to the “Job Description” page to see the different positions available. Then, go to the “Shifts Available” page and choose the shift/shifts you are interested in working.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
JOB DESCRIPTIONS
HANGING QUILTS FOR THE QUILT SHOW
To be a hanger, you should be able to climb a ladder (you will not climb more than 3 steps up) and be on your feet for long periods of time. This is a physically demanding job. If you are unable to do it, please do not sign-up for this position.
HELPING DURING HANG TIME – NO LADDERS
This will also be physically demanding, just no ladders. You will be walking the floor taking music stands to exhibits, covering bricks, putting stations in place, and putting signage up.
PROGRAM SELLERS
To help relieve the Commemorative booth, program sellers will be stationed close to each of the doors. The programs are sold for $2, and you will be responsible for the money and programs.
DOOR PEOPLE
This is an exciting position as you are at the entrance to the world’s largest annual quilt show. The pace is often fast—particularly preview night and morning shifts. During lunchtime, as people leave to go to lunch, it will get busy. You will have a chance to sit for a spell after the lunch crowd dwindles and during the evening shift. Please do not sit more than 10 or 15 minutes at a time. It just looks better if you greet people while you are on your feet.
DOOR PEOPLE IN THE FOOD COURT
You will be there to watch as people are leaving the area. You are there to keep attendees from bringing food and drink out of the area.
DOOR PEOPLE at the DEAD DOORS
We have breakaway doors that people can go out, but they cannot come back in (except during setup or takedown). These don’t always close and lock automatically, so they need to be watched. This is a sitting position. This is reserved for those that can not be on their feet any length of time.
TAKE DOWN
Payrate for takedown will still be $15.50 an hour and we feed you dinner!
On Saturday, takedown begins as soon as the area is secured and taped off after the show closes at 5 p.m. You will be put into groups and given assignments by the staff and Piece Corps. Dinner will be provided if you are working until all take-down work is complete by 11:59p.m.
