665. EVENT—CREATIVE VARIETY FORUM II

*$40

Saturday

Morning Event // 9 AM-Noon

See what this exciting event is all about! Six of the top artists from the Quilt Festival faculty will present this mixed focus, coordinated by Carling Mabry. Each will give a digital presentation or show-and-tell of their particular expertise. Then, spend fifteen minutes with each artist as they demonstrate the topics listed below. Go home with a booklet consisting of a handout from each presenter, new ideas, information on products and processes, and lots of enthusiasm.

June Colburn—Designing a Signature CHOP Asian artists and craftsmen have used a carved seal and vermilion ink to sign their work for centuries. For us it's an unexpected way to sign our textile work. See how anyone can create a design using their name, which can be machine- or hand-embroidered directly on work or on a separate fabric to attach to the work. The design could also be made into a silk screen in various sizes to be printed on new wearable art, quilts, and home decor accessories. An interesting way to design a business logo, too! The demo will show you how. www.junecolburn.com

Carling Mabry—Quilt-As-You-Go Without Bulky Seams In this focused forum, Carling will share practical techniques for using Quilt-As-You-Go methods, especially when working with bulky seams and quilting on a domestic sewing machine without a longarm. Learn how to break a quilt into manageable sections, reduce bulk at seam intersections, and plan construction to keep layers smooth. She'll cover strategies that make quilting large or heavy pieces achievable at home. Perfect for quilters who want confident, professional results using the sewing machine they already have. www.carlinglovescats.com

Swan Sheridan—Creative Label Making Don't know what to do with your quilt labels?  Join in this awesome demo and find out how to make your quilt labels both informative and exciting with a variety of techniques. Let Swan show you how to use your strongest skill sets to make your labels both special and long lasting. We'll look at the details that make your process an easy and rewarding one! www.swanamity.com

Michelle Trimble—Stunning Sunbursts Curious about trying improv, but don't like the wonky vibe? Overwhelmed by all the options? Choosing constraints at the outset of an improv project can not only lower the decision-making burden that can seem overwhelming, it can also ensure your composition finishes with dramatic flair. In this demo, you will see options for making an improv block, and experiment with variables that will alter the look of each variation. Take home step-by-step instructions for this block so you can start your improv journey tomorrow! www.quiltingchemistry.com

Kimberly Werth—Stretches and Strength Building for the Sewist If you love to sew but hate the aches and pains that come after, this forum is for you! We'll explore the ergonomics of sewing and take a deep dive into stretches and strength building. Results will speak for themselves with a few simple habits that are tailored to their body and sewing style. It's absolutely possible to make sewing even more enjoyable!

Carol Wilhoit—Best Walking Foot Quilting Tips Quilt with your walking foot, and finish your own quilts! Learn how to stitch a spiral with straight lines using several techniques that make walking foot quilting easier and more accurate. See the impact of thread color and learn how to quilt accurate shapes and straight lines without marking the quilt. The presentation will also cover how to achieve sharp points when you pivot, and how to know when to pivot to get evenly spaced stitched lines. www.carolquilts.com
